Our History
Established in 1933 by Dr. Mayes Miller, the first hospital in Castro County marked its inception as a privately owned institution with 10 beds, housed on the second floor of the First State Bank. In 1945, a significant shift occurred when a non-profit cooperative board acquired the hospital, leading to its official christening as Plains Memorial Hospital.
Relocating from its initial downtown space to repurposed army barracks east of its present site, the hospital underwent transformative changes. In 1963, the Texas legislature formalized the Castro County Hospital District. With the aid of a bond election and Hill-Burton funds, Plains Memorial Hospital took shape at its current location.
Over the years, ongoing enhancements to facilities and the addition of services have been integral to elevating healthcare standards for the community, and the year 2004 witnessed Plains Memorial Hospital earning the designation of a Critical Access Hospital, acknowledging its pivotal role in ensuring quality healthcare accessibility for rural populations.
Licensed by the Texas Department of Health, Plains Memorial Hospital is a 17 bed Critical Access Hospital. Committed to delivering exceptional healthcare services, the institution boasts a cadre of skilled professionals operating within a welcoming environment. Leveraging advanced technology and state-of-the-art equipment, Plains Memorial Hospital remains dedicated to the well-being of its patients.
