Whether caring for a patient in Dimmitt or serving alongside members of her Navy unit, Kimberly I. Smith, M.D., is often asked to do the same thing: lead with sound judgment, work as part of a team, and remain steady when others are counting on her.
Dr. Smith, a family medicine physician at the Medical Center of Dimmitt, recently reached a significant milestone in that life of service. After 20 years in the military, including active-duty and reserve service, she was promoted to Captain in the United States Navy.
She marked the promotion during an April 1 ceremony in Orlando, Florida, where her Navy Reserve unit is based. Dr. Smith travels to Orlando each month to fulfill her reserve duties while continuing to care for patients and families in Castro County.
Captain is one of the Navy’s senior officer ranks and is designated as O-6. Officers considered for promotion are reviewed by a selection board, whose members evaluate their service records, experience, and leadership before voting on who will advance.
For Dr. Smith, the promotion reflects two decades of taking on greater responsibility, supporting the people around her, and making decisions in situations where preparation and calm leadership matter. Those same qualities shape her work at the Medical Center of Dimmitt.
As a family medicine physician, Dr. Smith cares for patients of all ages, treats a wide range of health concerns, helps individuals manage ongoing conditions, and provides comprehensive women’s health services. Her role requires her to listen carefully, work closely with patients and colleagues, and make thoughtful decisions based on each person’s needs.
“Medicine and military service both require people who can lead, work well with others, and stay focused when the situation is difficult,” said Elisha Rosier, RN, BSN, CEO of Castro County Healthcare. “Dr. Smith brings those qualities to every part of her work. We are proud of her promotion, and we are grateful that our patients and families benefit from her experience, judgment, and commitment to serving others.”
Dr. Smith has nearly 20 years of experience in family medicine. She earned her medical degree from Meharry Medical College of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee, and has practiced in communities across Tennessee, Florida, and Texas.
Her promotion to Captain recognizes a military career built on service and leadership. Her work in Dimmitt reflects those same values close to home, where patients, families, and coworkers rely on her care each day.
Castro County Healthcare congratulates Capt. Kimberly I. Smith, M.D., on her promotion and thanks her for 20 years of service to her country.
